He has picked himself up and patched himself back together, and is convincing as a wise survivor. Nolte has been through some hard times, and posed for at least one mug shot that went around the world. Yes, he had some big hits, but "48 HRS" was a breakthrough at the time, and when he does a superhero epic, it's the inventive " Hulk" by Ang Lee. But run his name through, and you'll discover that he is, and essentially always has been, an art-film actor. You possibly have the impression that Nick Nolte has been in a lot of commercial hits and is, or was until recently, an action star. Sometimes in an imperfect movie there is consolation simply in regarding the actors. Does Socrates even exist? Is his gas station really there? If Dan bought himself a Baby Ruth from the candy machine, could he eat it? Of course these questions betray me as hopelessly focused on realism. Oddly enough, it's not the plausible stuff like the gymnastics that fascinates me in the story, but the mystery of Socrates. To quote myself (this situation has come up before): I can't give away the ending, because it gives itself away. The story arc of "Peaceful Warrior" is so familiar that in addition to being inspired by fact, it is inspired by at least two-thirds of all the sports movies ever made. Told he will never compete in gymnastics again, he contemplates suicide, but eventually finds himself back at the service station, where Socrates shares such wisdom as, "The journey is what brings us happiness, not the destination." I was happy to hear this, because it explains what Godard meant when he said, "The cinema is not the station, the cinema is the train." This is inspired by the real Dan's accident in which he broke his leg in 21 places. Quizzed on such puzzles, Socrates has helpful answers such as pointing to his forehead while saying, "Take out the trash, Dan."ĭan's motorcycle hits a car and he breaks his femur in 17 places. How did he do that? Later, Dan also wants to know how Socrates appears in his bedroom during sex, and on top of a beam in the gymnasium. As he's leaving, he turns back and finds that Socrates is now standing on the roof of the station, 15 feet or more above the ground. Once, after a nasty fall, his coach tells him: "Nobody on this planet can do what you're trying to do."ĭan is out jogging the first night he meets the Nolte character, who he eventually thinks of as Socrates. Dan is a gymnast on the Berkeley team, a hot-shot who's always trying out risky stuff in the gym. He has such conversations with Dan Millman ( Scott Mechlowicz), a character based on the author of the 1980 self-help best-seller that has inspired the movie. "This is a service station," he says at one point. This station, however, seems well-lighted and orderly, and Nolte's character is always busy under the hood of a car. Nolte plays the only attendant at an all-night Texaco station that looks so old-fashioned, it could be the Fatal Gas Station in a horror movie: You know, where the sinister old scarecrow in overalls tells the kids to turn left and go down the old dirt road into the swamp. ![]() See the Deposit Account Agreement and Additional Banking Services and Fees for the terms and conditions associated with these products. ![]() She packed her hopes in a pair of suitcases and holding the hands of her two children began to cross the world again with only a hundred dollars left to survive until her first salary as a teacher. Since Ana’s hair is as curly as her words are straight, once she finished the commitment with the Latin band and had contract in hand from the conservatory, she returned to Cartagena as promised, but this time not to stay. Ana then left her two teenagers in the care of her mother, organized her paperwork and began her journey with the promise to return a year later. Without thinking twice she accepted the financial offer was tempting as it would give her the opportunity to save money. In September 2006 she received a call from a Latin band that was playing in Singapore and were interested to hire her as a violinist for twelve months. Her wish was solely to make her children happy and with her innate talent for business, this allowed her to trade serenades for bicycles, or she would offer her teaching services at her children’s school without salary as a compensation for their education. ![]() Her weekends were always hectic, after arriving in the mornings elegantly dressed from playing at a wedding, she had to change in the blink of an eye into a Mariachi costume to be ready for the next performance. Ana worked as a violin teacher, played her violin at weddings, serenades and church masses, and owned a restaurant as well as a hardware shop. Ana toured Central America and Europe with the Orchestra, but neither this nor the flashy job offers she received were more convincing than a new dream: to form her own tropical music group, one that by a twist of fate disintegrated years later and led her back to her hometown.īack in Cartagena she became a single mother and had to find new sources of income to raise her two children. She joined the School of Fine Arts of Cartagena where she began her studies in music education and violin, and after finishing her diploma, she earned a scholarship with the National Youth Orchestra of Bogota to pursue advanced studies in classical violin. As a child, she was surrounded by music and soon acquired skills on the violin, a virtue inherited from her father. ![]() Getting there was not easy for her, there is a story full of inspiration behind her achievements that identifies the Colombian woman as hard-working, honest, relentless and capable of anything.Īna comes from a family where economic limitations contrasted with the outpouring of talent. Miss Ana, as she is affectionately called by her students and colleagues, is a recognized and sought after classical violin teacher in one of the most prestigious conservatories of music in Singapore a place where violinists from Europe and Asia strive to get a position. Ana María is one of those women whose native lineage from Cartagena is so strong, that not even residing 10 years outside of Colombia has shaken her melodious Caribbean accent, the expression of her hands as she speaks or that easy-going personality. Tuesday to start selling the DVD, which in its theatrical release set box-office records since broken by "Spider-Man." So will more features pay off in more sales? Warner's Martinoff wouldn't say how many discs are being shipped, but she did say that many retailers are opening at 12:01 a.m. It's all a continuation of the idea that all the features are part of one package, that the ROM isn't a totally separate thing - just more." "There's over 80 motion transitions on the menu, the navigation is different when you go back and visit the second time. ![]() "The `Harry Potter' DVD is the most complex and involved project we've done yet on DVD," he said. One advantage Hemstreet and Warner had with "Potter" was the continuing advancement of technology. "With `Harry Potter,' knowing we have more parts coming up, we decided to develop that as well with the online features such as trading cards that connect users." "With `The Matrix,' we were trying to create online events and pull people together in sort of an online community, knowing that the Matrix people are coming out with the next two films," he said. Warner's Hemstreet brought many of the lessons he learned with "The Matrix Revisited" DVD (which contained behind-the-scenes features, online links and also helped preview the next two episodes) to Harry Potter's fantasy world. But the point here is to have the DVD and PC experience be as much like being Harry Potter as possible, and speaking commands is much closer to that world than clicking a mouse. How well does it work? On a mid-power PC, using voice commands is slower than using a mouse, and it does take a few minutes to set up the software. If you discover some of the spells using the movie as a hint, it will unlock additional features." Once we were planning this DVD, we thought that having voice navigation fit perfectly with the whole concept of the magic around the story and we sought out and found One Voice and developed it into the DVD, including building in spells. "With it, you can use your voice as your mouse, so to speak, to navigate through the different features. "The One Voice technology is a voice-enabled navigation program," said Hemstreet. There's a section where users can play with the Sorting Hat to be assigned to one of the houses, just as Harry was in the book and movie.Īnd with a PC microphone, much of it can be done by speaking simple commands with software that comes with the DVD called One Voice. Just trying to get keypress events from gnome-terminal are non-existant, whereas firefox, xterm, eclipse, when I parse the XEvents, I don't see Keypress events in the stream of XEvents coming from the display for gnome-terminal, I see them just fine. I've tried a few things so far and I'm wondering if there isn't some issue we don't understand with gnome-terminal. Much like everyone else, I'm having a similar issue with gnome-terminal on CentOS 7 (it seems to work fine on gnome-terminal in centOS 6.5 and 5.6). I have written an application that catalogs user input from from various X applications to perform statistical analysis on how user's use applications (Human Computer Interactions Research). |
